Intrinzen Summer Camp

A gathering of brave and wonderful horse friends at the Intrinzen home farm in the San Juan Islands

Be my guest.

This is NOT a clinic, workshop, etc. This is NOT a paid event. It's a (free) camp-out on our farm.

Don’t like camping? There will be a small number of inside spaces. But the weather here in late July is GORGEOUS... not too hot, not too cold. In late July, it’s as close to paradise weather as I can imagine.

(There are a VERY limited number of rooms at local Bed & Breakfast inns, but this is peak tourist season on the island and hard to get reservations.)

You’ll have access to hot water, electricity, bathrooms, and wifi. Outdoor (and limited indoor) cooking.

It's more like glamping than camping, but... most likely you’ll need to bring your own tent. (Or at least a sleeping bag for inside the dojo).

WHEN: The week of July 17 2023 through July 23. You can arrive as early as July 14.

WHERE: At our 30-acre farm in the San Juan Islands. (Note: for privacy, we do not publicly list which island we are on, but if you sign-up for camp, we’ll give you the exact address. There IS an island in the San Juans named... San Juan Island. We‘re on a different island, but very close to San Juan. Same ferry system.

WHO: Open to all Intrinzeneers and all other horse-friendly allies. You do NOT need to have taken my course (Pain Science + Performance), but it will probably be much more interesting if you have, or if you are already familiar with the science and philosophy of movement and motivation. But it's OK if you’re completely new to force-free / punishment-free training or you're simply Intrinzen-curious, but have never tried to do any of these things.

HOW: 40-minute ferry from Anacortes, Washington to the San Juan Islands. You can drive a car onto the ferry, but you don’t need a car if you’re staying at the farm.

AIRPORTS: Closest major international airport is Bellingham Washington, but most people fly in through Seattle.

Getting from Airport to Ferry:

There is a shuttle bus directly from Seattle airport to the Anacortes ferry.

When you arrive at the ferry, someone will pick you up if needed, or you can drive directly to the farm. We are about 18 minutes from the ferry terminal.

If you are walking on, NO ferry reservation is needed. But if you are driving, you will need a ferry reservation, but you can wait until 48 hours before you arrive to make that reservation.

NOTE: the ferry from Canada (Victoria) is usually NOT running. You need to get to Anacortes.

AGENDA: no idea. The event will of course be self-organized, but of course you will play with the horses ;)

Many activities will be happening though including nightly campfires, hiking along the ocean (you might even see our fabulous resident Orcas!), photo-shoots, and self-organized workshops on any topics you want to teach and/or learn. It's a community experience.

WHO CAN I BRING?

Assuming you have a tent for two, feel free to bring your +1. As of now, we do not feel the farm accommodations are child-safe, so at this time, we’re saying no kids please. But it's still maybe possible. We'll have to talk about it.

CAN I BRING MY HORSE?

If you are local, and you’re OK with the horse accommodations here, probably YES. We can discuss as the date gets closer, but chances are yes.

CAN I BRING A DOG?

Maybe, but... there will be a lot of restrictions! We’ll talk.

WHAT IF I AM AN INTROVERT and/or ON THE SPECTRUM and/or NEED LOTS OF DOWNTIME?

Then you’re My People, and I can assure you there will be “quiet zones”, private spaces dedicated to down-regulation, and trust me: NOBODY will judge you for needing a LOT of downtime.
This is a large property; those who wish to camp near others can do so, and those who want their tent in a secluded area will have plenty of spaces to choose from.
Seriously. NOBODY (least of all me) will have a problem if you need your space, wish to eat in privacy, can't do much “exercise”, etc. This is a private farm, surrounded by open space. We do NOT have *accessibility* options (no wheel chair accommodations etc.) but we have two electric golf carts so if walking from one part of the farm to another is an issue, no worries. I'll personally be taking the carts a LOT.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Tent, sleeping bag, etc. (unless you're one of the early sign-ups for an inside slot). Again, the weather is almost guaranteed to be incredible. (A light summer rain is possible but very unlikely.) And “heat waves” here are when it’s 78 F. We’re totally spoiled. It WILL be cooler at night, in the 50’s.
Light pollution is low here, so if you’re into stars... bring your astrophotography gear.
You can see the Milky Way here at night!

We’ll give you a more complete list of recommended items later.

AWESOMENESS: this is a friendly island in every way. I mean REALLY REALLY friendly. And one of the safest places on the planet.

NO ticks. NO dangerous snakes. NO predators (no mountain lines, no wolves, no coyotes).

Excellent air quality.

TOO MANY BUNNIES though.

If you’re not a hardcore camper, well, camping HERE on this farm in July is camping on EASY MODE. Yes, you’ll probably be in a tent, but you will NOT really be “roughing it”.

CAN I VOLUNTEER HELP: OMG YES PLEASE. I’m really really REALLY going to need volunteers to help me with pretty much everything before, during, and after. So whatever you want to help with... you’ll have my deepest gratitude :)

WHAT WILL BE PROVIDED:

Coffee. So. Much Coffee. ALL the coffee.
Also tea, if that's your thing.

Gluten-free snacks.

Running water (hot water available for showers and/or washing dishes etc. Depending on how many people are here, you might have to coordinate with one another...)

Washer/Dryer for clothing available (again, you'll need to coordinate with one another).

Electricity in most areas with an extension cord, also plenty of places to charge batteries etc., and WIFI. Bring your power converters for the USA!

Limited but available outdoor and in-the-barn cooking gear including cooking hot plates, toasters, etc. and (if we’re organized about it) use of our house ovens. If you’re hardcore, there's always campfire cooking :)

GROCERY STORES: we have two on the island including a wonderful organic grocer and a large full-service grocery store.

MEDICAL: this is an island! During the week, there is a full medical clinic with a Doctor and x-ray capability. (not open on the weekends).

The nearest hospital requires a ferry ride. If it is a SERIOUS EMERGENCY, medical helicopters are always available to take you to a major hospital immediately. We are only a few minutes from the air field.

The island has an OUTSTANDING Emergency / EMT / Paramedic service.

But to be clear: this is a small island. And the ferries DO NOT RUN AT NIGHT.

PHARMACY: prescription drugs available during the week, NOT nights or weekends.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE: Too many to list. Google the San Juan Islands and you’ll get an idea :) If you (or your +1) happens to golf, my husband will be thrilled to take you to the local course just a few minutes from our house).

Great photography opportunities, hiking, biking, etc.  If you're into water things, there’s sea kayaking (or swimming if you're really badass).

OUR FARM: a 30-acre hay/horse farm a couple miles from the ocean. We are safely outside the tsunami zone (just in case the worst happens).
We are NOT outside the zombie zone. (In case the second-worst happens).

In late July, this farm will look like most of California: dry. Forget anything you might think about the Pacific Northwest... we are in a micro-climate with low rainfall.

ALMOST FORGOT: There is a small possibility that camp week will overlap with our hay-making days. If that happens, well, all able-bodied people might be recruited, bribed, passively-aggressively coerced to help :) But "it’ll be fun", she said. "You'll love it", she said.

CAN I PLAY WITH YOUR HORSES? Of course. In fact, it is MANDATORY. The horses will not let you leave unless you do. No prior experience needed. And you are welcome to stay safely on the other side of a fence, unless you’re one of the “crazy pool noodle people” (you know who you are).

Sunset on the farm

Bring your camera.

“Very few things in life can be so exhilarating as a cabin in the middle of the forest and loving life effortlessly while enjoying the smell of freshly ground heaven in your hot cup, in front of a fireplace... Sweet Solitude, you have taught me to live with very little. So very little it turned out to be a luxury.”
Efrat Cybulkiewicz

“If you see a campfire as just a fire, your imagination is very weak, because it is not a lifeless warmth, but a mysterious friend who came to visit you in the darkness of the forest and shared your food, dreams and life!”
